Title: The Forum is Shutting Down, closing as of Jan 1, 2018
Post by: D4F on December 16, 2017, 01:42:03 PM
"This forum will be closing to new posts as of January 1, 2018.  It will remain in place after that and can be searched for all of the conversations that have taken place over the past four years."  -  quote of the above news.

I wanted to make sure that the news was not missed and didn't catch forum users by surprise.  I also want to thank Susan, Geoff, and Jack for their work and support over the years.

And thanks to all of the users who have supported the forum and made it the information source for Gaggia machines.

Fred,  aka D4F

I'm sorry to hear that, but I want to thank all of you for the tremendous help on my OWC.  I'm this close to having it totally up to snuff -- grouphead gasket replacement and some funkiness with the switches -- but I've already enjoyed many a tasty shot thanks to you all!  -- Steve

Replacing that group gasket is going to be a matter of trial and error on your part.  In fact, you just might have to make your own....?

The gasket for the OWC is thinner than the 5.8mm gasket that the other aluminum/brass boiler Gaggias use, and the only source we knew of dried up a few years ago.

Thanks, Susan!  I've got a sheet of silicone rubber, but haven't figured out how to cut it cleanly yet.  Anyway, thanks for all the help.

I researched this problem when I did my OWC. The best method is to cut out roughly oversize and grind to size using a grinding wheel. I used a bench grinder.

Sorry to see that the forum is closing, It has been a mine of information for me. :'(

Dang, I hate to see this. My apologies for not having any real progress to report on the steam valve seat replacement (PEEK is a viable material, PTFE proved out to be too soft), but my inlaws health issues have largely devoured my time. Best wishes to all, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I am a new member here but still very sorry to hear that the forum is closing. I want to thank everyone that has given help and advice over the years and built up a fantastic repository of information on Gaggia machines and to the administrators and people who put in the background work that isn't always seen.

Is the reason for the closure due to the commitment and time required in maintaining a expertise based forum? I presume there will not be an alternative forum created?

Rob

Well certainly that is a factor.

Norvin, thanks for the tip! Now I have to find a neighbor who owns a bench grinder.

Hi all,

Typically I have only just joined and pretty much finished reading most of the library and the posts!
Great site and as others have said, a shame but I understand the commitment involved.

And none of that is going to go away.

Very sorry to hear this news, and am also very thankful to the moderators and people who contributed to the forum! I have used it many times and it has been my go-to for anything Gaggia related! Although I did not post that much, I definitely enjoyed reading!

So Fred when you say the posts will remain after the closing, how does that work? If the forum is closing how can we access the posts? I guess it will stay available for viewing only?

Thanks again!!

Yep, available for viewing only.  Many/most topics have been covered and the information is here.  Search will be your friend for finding that information :)

Any chance it can be shifted to a new forum (perhaps with a leaner format that's not as management-intensive)?

Not really an option, but if you notice the current OWC conversations over at HB, you will see that the slack will be taken up nicely over there.

I would like to thank the moderators, the information has been priceless, and I feel I'm getting the absolute maximum out of my Classic because of the information provided. Just yesterday, I've taken my Classic apart for maintenance, something I started with a year ago. Choice of right Coffee, grinder, plus clean machine plus water are the ingredients for perfect Coffee each and every time. The addition of PID plus changing the steam wand have helped me tremendously.

Sad to see this forum going away.  I'm sure HB and others will pick up the slack, but it was nice having a dedicated site for Gaggia machines.  It's great that the forum will still be available as an archive going forward.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me get the most out of my Classic and guided me on my espresso journey.
