Use OWC OEM portafilter for DIY pressure and/or temp gauge?
« on: November 13, 2017, 05:16:01 PM »
I bought a bottomless portafilter for the OWC. (Sprayed first 3 pulls, but improved flow last 3 pulls.)  So now I have an idle OWC OEM portafilter. This portafilter has two spouts built directly into the base, not a single spout with a detachable two spout add-on. I can use this for backflushing, but I’m wondering if it could be modded for the greater good.

The reference library has a DIY pressure gauge, but it appears to be based on a portafilter with a single threaded spout. The library also has a DIY thermofilter, which I can now make using the single shot basket.  I’ve done the “not-so-blind” OPV adjustment, so I could move on to the thermofilter, but was wondering if anyone had any thoughts/experience with modding the OEM portafilter.

Use it for backflushing. I am pretty sure it will not be idle if you backflush with water after each espresso making session before shutting the machine off. Not sure how you can attach a pressure gauge on a built-in 2 spout portafilter. The DIY thermofilter basket will work with your bottomless portafilter.

Yeah, I’d have to plug one hole, maybe after running a thermocouple through it, and figure out how to get a seal with the other hole. As you say, making backflushing convenient each day is more important.  Thanks!

this is what I did with an extra one.  Filled a single basket with food-grade RTV and jammed a k-type probe in there.

I read the post on HB about your measured temperature.  The thermofilter that Susan and I built had a fine guitar string passage molded into the epoxy puck, and the thermocouple bead was in the direct path.  The correct wire diameter will simulate the brew flow.

There are a couple of versions of DIY thermofilters on the thread at CG.  Search diy portafilter and/or diy thermofilter. Also a thread of the one that Susan built is on GUG.

Yup, as you read/saw I wasn't getting an accurate reading.  Water definitely needs to flow.
